Singer-songwriter Jessie Veeder graduated in May 2005 from UND, just after recording her latest CD "A Place To Belong" at Raptor Studios, and Barking Dog Records is thrilled to announce its release. It has been our privilege to work with talented young artists including Brenda Weiler, Margot Wagner and Brennen Leigh - now Jessie joins the roster as a remarkable songwriting talent with a compelling voice to match.
Western North Dakota paints the backdrop of many of Jessie's songs - she is a native of Watford City. Jessie Veeder, 21, has already established herself as an accomplished and professional musician, managing a multi-state college touring circuit and recording an album of original songs while finishing her bachelors degree and graduating with honors.
Beginning with her love for words and an old guitar handed down to her from her father, Jessie began songwriting at the age of 12. "The isolation of growing up on a working ranch in Western North Dakota allowed me the freedom and space to develop creatively," Jessie says of her songwriting. Her newest songs reflect the poignant ambivalence of wanting to leave yet longing for home and familiar terrain.
Barking Dog Records producer Mike Coates and arranger Linda Coates, in active collaboration with Jessie, have brought in another stellar cast of musicians to flesh out her songs and give them each a distinctive flavor. From rootsy instrumental textures including harmonica, pedal steel, slide and dobro guitar to quirky touches like vibes, cello, accordion and oboe, the songs are grounded by Jessie's acoustic guitar work and an outstanding rhythm section (including members of popular Fargo band davis?).
