Ricardo Visus was a colleague and dear friend of Mike and Linda Coates during the 1980s and early 1990s at Moorhead State University in Moorhead, MN. He was born in Navarra, Spain and began his musical studies at the Conservatorio Pablo Sarasate in Pamplona, Spain. He continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory in Madrid, Spain, and in 1963 he won the international Scholarship "Fundacion Juan March" to study in Milan, Italy. In 1965 he was awarded the Gold Medal at the J.B. Viotti International Awards in Vercelli, Italy, competing against more than 100 performers from 22 countries.

Ricardo Visus has sung the principal operas of the Italian and Spanish repertoire in performances in Italy, Spain, Argentina and the United States. He was a leading tenor during one year with the Company Mendoza LaSalle and two years with the Spanish National Lyric Company. An accomplished and popular recitalist, Visus has performed recitals with piano and guitar throughout Spain, the United States, Argentina, Brazil and Italy.

In 1972, Ricardo Visus came to the United States and joined the music faculty of Moorhead State University, where he taught voice and directed the opera program. Many of his former students are now performing professionally on opera and recital stages throughout the United States and Europe.

Ricardo was Linda Coates' voice teacher during the latter years of her bachelors degree study and throughout her graduate study. From 1984 to 1992, Linda's musical association with Ricardo, which began as voice student, eventually included piano accompanist, recital vocal duo partner, teaching colleague and cherished friend. Mike Coates also had the great pleasure of performing many times with Ricardo as classical guitar accompanist. From standard Spanish song repertoire to rare South American pieces - including one unpublished song by Heitor Villa-Lobos given to Ricardo in handwritten manuscript by Villa-Lobos' widow - Ricardo and Mike enjoyed bringing this wonderful music to Midwestern audiences.

As both a classical guitarist and teacher of audio production in Moorhead State's recording studios, Mike was determined to make sure that Ricardo Visus had the opportunity to record an album of his lifelong specialty - Spanish and South American song - before he retired and left the USA permanently to return to Spain. In the spring of 1994, Ricardo and Mike (along with pianist Terrie Manno) recorded a CD featuring music of composers including Villa-Lobos, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Obradors, Sandoval, de Falla, Rodrigo, and Turina. A limited number are available for sale - contact Mike Coates for price and availability.
